Alex da Silva Barbosa Andrade, who uses the name Xand to sign his artworks, was born in April 16th, 1974 in Luanda (Angola) from Cape Verdian parents. At an early age he moved to his parents’ motherland. He now lives between Cape Verde and Holland. He was graduated with Honor at the Willem de Kooning Academy of Art and Architecture in Rotterdam in 1999, followed by the Exchange Programme Erasmus – Socrates, from the European Union, to study at Alonso Cano Faculty of Fine Arts, in Granada, Spain, between 1997 and 1998. He is Post-Graduated and Master, in year 2000, at Minerva Academy, Groningen, Netherlands. Alex da Silva is exhibiting his work regularly, since 1999, in Cape Verde, Netherlands, United Arab Emirates, Spain, France, Luxembourg, Curacao, Senegal, China, Germany and Portugal. In 2012 Alex was assigned to create a monument, titled “Clave”, in Rotterdam, to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Dutch slavery’s trade from Africa to the Surinam and Antilles in the Dutch Caribbean.
